As we approach the 4th of July, it seems like a good time to ponder the meaning of freedom. There are still men and women fighting for our country each day while their families wait for them at home. We pray for their strength and safety. Their bravery amazes me and I have deep respect for it.
There is more meaning to the term “freedom” to me. Despite the fact that I live in a free country, I still feel restricted or stuck. Most of the time my anxieties are the culprit. When I take the time to pay attention I typically find that there are things I want to do, but they are SCARY! Why does it have to be so hard? Why can’t I just do the fun things that everyone else is doing without getting SO nervous?
The truth is that life is hard. For many years I worked to make my life easier. You know, when something was hard or hurtful or anything negative, I learned to simply avoid it. It seemed like the perfect solution! Building up walls to keep painful experiences away is a natural response. Unfortunately this leads to a lonely unfulfilling life. It did for me anyway.
I feel the most joy when I overcome obstacles and have healthy, loving relationships. Overcoming obstacles often involves pain, and sometimes healthy relationships go through rough patches. That’s ok, we need to work through it.
What are your obstacles? Chances are, your dreams are just on the other side of them. They love to hide out there. The journey is part of the plan to help us grow and be brave. Where is a good starting point for you, do you have a plan of action?
You can do this, and if you need a little encouragement I am here for you. I want to challenge you to challenge yourself by pushing your comfort zone this week. I’d love to hear from you about your journey!
